My research and teaching explore the dynamic interplay between contextual and psychological factors that shape the political opinions and behaviors of both high- and low-status group members. I place particular emphasis on understanding the antecedents and sociopolitical consequences of perceived discrimination. Broadly, my work also investigates attitudes toward racial, ethnic, and religious minority groups, as well as the political behaviors of these communities, especially within contexts of status threat.

In addition to my focus on political behavior in both American and comparative contexts, I have extensive research and teaching expertise in political representation, survey and experimental methodsracial and ethnic voting patterns, demographic analysis, and redistricting. My expertise in these areas has led to serving as a voting rights and redistricting consultant to jurisdictions during the latest redistricting cycle. I have also been sought out as an expert witness by several non-partisan organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Campaign Legal Center (CLC), Common Cause, Fair Districts Now, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), League of Women Voters, Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), and Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ).

In the area of redistricting, I have drawn and evaluated single-member district plans, applying state-specific and traditional redistricting principles such as population parity, compactness, core retention, preservation of political subdivisions and communities of interest, compliance with the Voting Rights Act, and considerations of partisan bias and competitiveness. My scholarship has also contributed to the examination of racially polarized voting patterns and the development of the eiCompare and eiExpand R Packages.

My research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed academic journals, including Political Behavior, Political Psychology, Public Opinion Quarterly, British Journal of Political Science, Sociological Methods and Research, Perspectives on Politics, Electoral Studies, Urban Affairs Review, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Journal of Public Policy, and Politics, Groups, and Identities.
